Juneteenth Summit 2021

March 4, 2021 By Stephany Spaulding

Just two months shy of the first anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act by 8 votes. It is one of the first times in history that mass reform in policing across the country has been considered and prepared to move out of the House of Representatives. While it still needs to be considered by the Senate to ever become law, Americans plagued by violence and lack of accountability in policing are witnessing growth in momentum for structural reform. But will reform be enough?

Whether to reform as opposed to dismantling to build fresh and new are questions at the heart of conciliatory work and practice. And we want to probe these kinds of questions with you. To commemorate the first anniversary of the Truth and Conciliation Commission, we are hosting a virtual Juneteenth Summit (June 16-18, 2021) and invite you to participate. We are gathering anti-racism practitioners, grassroots organizers, and like-minded movement builders from across the nation to lay a foundation for a national narrative shift towards conciliation in the United States. Additionally, we will provide attendees with tools for truth-telling, unlearning, and accountability for building an anti-racist society. So please, save the dates!

Share with your family, neighbors, and larger community the need for a federal Truth and Conciliation Commission led by and for the people. No one else needs ever to become another hashtag of mourning because of deeply rooted and systemic racism. It’s past time that we tell the truth and begin the work of building a conciliatory future.
